iPhone OS3 software release

Published by the deckchair guru under Tech

Testing out the new landscape keyboard on iPhone OS3. Not bad, my thumbs are having to move a lot more than they’re used to though!

Not sure how often I’ll use the voice memo thing, I don’t use notes effectively as it is.

MMS is a welcome addition, should never have been left out of the original software.

Typing on landscape is going well, very easy to adjust to and far less incidental typos.

Will give myself few days to properly evaluate OS3 but great so far.

Wordpress for iPhone

Published by the deckchair guru under Tech

Have installed wordpress on my iPhone.

The theory is that I’ll be able to post some razor-sharp posts as ideas come to mind, and not try to remember for later but forget.

Let’s see whether that happens or not…

“24/7 online access” – no sh|t!

Published by the deckchair guru under Rants, Tech

This rant’s been building up in me for a while and reached tipping point this morning, so I offer you:

“24/7 online access” – no sh|t!

A lot of companies and organisations offer a secure access portal to a user’s personal information/account, etc. Ten years ago, this was pretty much unheard of and the ability to access things at any time of the day or night, was a real boon.

Promotion of these services centred on the 24/7 accessibility. For example, banks gave customer the ability to check their account balance/s whenever they like, and sold it as a round-the-clock benefit as you no longer had to work around branch opening hours.

Time’s marched on since the initial launch of online services though, but the language of promoting it hasn’t. Surely we’re all agreeably that in 2009, “online access” is a synonym for “access any time”, making the “24/7” tag redundant?!

What’s worse is that so-called ‘digital marketing experts’ boast about this on their company websites! Hey ‘experts’: if you’re such a fountain of ‘digital’ knowledge, why are you spruiking a standard, basic fact as being a unique benefit?

Another new look

Published by the deckchair guru under Tech

Upgraded to Wordpress 2.2 and it rendered the sidebar widgets plugin useless, as well as the old theme I had. So, another new look for this place.

Enjoy…

Theme Switcher

Published by the deckchair guru under Tech

I’ve installed a theme switching plugin, which allows readers to choose how they want the site to look to them.  You can do this from the top of the left sidebar.

The default theme is ‘Journal’, which I added tonight.  I’m a bit restless with how this place looks at the moment, but figure giving people a choice means not everyone must bend to my whim.

Was getting a bit bored of the look of this place, so have done some redecorating.  Happy to hear thoughts on the new look and feel.

New email update system

Published by the deckchair guru under Tech

I’ve been having some difficulties with the automatic update email system I had running, nothing I did seemed to fix it.

I’ve gone back to the drawing board, deleted the old plugin and installed a new one.

To receive an email whenever a new post is published, it is necessary to register, which can be done by following the “Subscribe” link in the Navigate menu.

Please let me know if anything seems a bit out.
